Choose the right location

Place your incubator on a stable, flat surface that is free from vibrations and away from direct sunlight, drafts, heating vents, and exterior doors. A dedicated room or corner with consistent ambient temperature (65-80°F / 18-27°C) produces the most reliable results.

• Avoid placing the incubator near windows, exterior walls, or air conditioning vents.
• Keep it away from high-traffic areas where bumping could disturb eggs.
• Ensure the power outlet is dedicated — avoid sharing circuits with appliances that draw heavy loads.
• If using a cabinet incubator, allow at least 6 inches of clearance on all sides for ventilation.

Preheat before loading eggs

Turn the incubator on and let it reach a stable temperature for at least 4-6 hours before placing any eggs. This verifies the thermostat is working and the unit holds a consistent temperature.

• For forced-air incubators, target 99.5°F (37.5°C) measured at egg level.
• For still-air incubators, the temperature at the top of the eggs should read slightly higher — typically 101-102°F (38.3-38.9°C) — because still air creates a temperature gradient.
• Use a calibrated thermometer to verify the built-in reading. Place it at egg height, not near the heating element.
• Once stable, check the temperature at least twice over a two-hour window before adding eggs.

Check humidity system

If your incubator has a water reservoir or humidity control system, fill it and confirm that humidity can reach and hold your target range.

• For the first 18 days of chicken egg incubation, aim for 45-55% relative humidity.
• During lockdown (the final 3 days), increase humidity to 65-75%.
• Test the water reserve system before loading eggs to ensure it flows correctly and the sensor (if equipped) responds.

Clean and sanitize

Before each hatch cycle, clean the incubator thoroughly. Remove any debris from the previous cycle, wash removable trays, and wipe all interior surfaces with a mild disinfectant. Let it dry completely before turning it on.

Verify the turning mechanism

If your incubator has an automatic egg turner, test it before loading eggs. Confirm the motor runs, the tray rotates, and eggs would be turned at least 3-5 times per day. If you are turning eggs manually, mark one side of each egg with an "X" so you can track rotation.
